Sabbaticals

Sabbatical leaves support sustained scholarly and creative work. The policy is set in the Faculty Handbook; this page summarizes it.

Regular sabbatical leaves for tenured faculty

Tenured faculty are eligible for a one-semester leave at full pay or a full-year leave at half pay every seventh year of full-time employment.

Junior faculty sabbatical and post-tenure leave

Faculty who have successfully completed their third-year review or their tenure review are eligible for a one-semester leave at full pay. These leaves typically occur in the fourth or seventh year of employment.

How to arrange a sabbatical

There is no formal application. Faculty and their department or program chair should discuss sabbatical intentions during the review year and coordinate the timing with the department’s curricular needs. The planned sabbatical must then be reported to the Provost.

[[PASTE: how and by when to notify the Provost (form, email, deadline), whether a post-sabbatical report is expected, and how a year at half pay interacts with benefits.]]

Funding during a sabbatical

Wallace Scholarly Activities funds may be used for short-term trips from the sabbatical base location, but not for the residential costs of the sabbatical itself. See Internal Funding.
