Some research needs review or disclosure before it begins. Find the area that fits your work below. Students working on research under your supervision are covered by the same reviews, and you are the responsible investigator.
Which review applies
| Area | When it applies | How to start | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Institutional Review Board (IRB) | Research with human participants, including surveys, interviews, experiments, and secondary data about people | Apply to the IRB before collecting data | irb@macalester.edu |
| Animal Care and Use (IACUC) | Research and teaching with live vertebrate animals | Submit the IACUC Animal Use Form before any work with animals | IACUC site |
| Biosafety (IBC) | Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids and other biological agents | Ask before beginning; procedures are being updated | Associate Provost |
| Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (CITI training) | Students and postdoctoral researchers on federally funded projects; CSR students and their faculty mentors; anyone submitting human subjects research to the IRB | Complete the CITI training modules before work begins; access instructions are on the grants office forms page | Grants office |
| Conflicts of Interest | Financial interests related to externally funded research | Disclose with your grant proposal | Associate Provost |
| Intellectual Property | Inventions, software, creative works, or data you may want to license or publish | Ask before agreeing to intellectual property terms; a policy is being developed | Associate Provost |
| Research Misconduct | Fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in research | Raise concerns with the Office of the Provost | Associate Provost |
How the reviews work together
- Approval comes first. Get any review you need before work begins, including projects supported by internal funding such as WSA, CSR, and Spark.
- Students are covered too. Students working on your project fall under the same reviews, and many need CITI training in the responsible and ethical conduct of research before they start.
- Externally funded? Sponsors add their own requirements, and the Research Policies and Procedures index lists every policy that applies to sponsored research. See External Grants.
- Not sure which applies? Ask before you start: Dennis Cao, Associate Provost, dcao@macalester.edu
