The Institutional Review Board (IRB) oversees research involving human participants conducted by Macalester faculty, staff, students, and college committees. Its work is guided by the Belmont Report, federal regulations (45 CFR 46), state and local law, and college policy.
The IRB maintains its own site with everything you need:
- IRB home — scope, decision tool for whether your project needs review
- Researcher’s Guide — application guidance and consent form templates
- Forms — faculty/staff and student applications, advisor signature, protocols involving children, adverse events, continuing review, modification, closure
- Review dates and turnaround — submissions are rolling; exempt and expedited reviews typically take 7-10 days; submit by mid-November for winter-break data collection; expect slower turnaround in summer
- Policies and procedures — student advisors, PI requirements, international research, record retention
- About the IRB — current membership and chair
All investigators, including students, complete CITI training in human subjects research before submitting.
