When an external grant you hold pays indirect costs, a portion is set aside in an indirect fund in your name to support your scholarship. The balance carries forward from year to year until you spend it.

What indirect funds support
Indirect funds are used the same way as Faculty Travel & Research (FTR) funds: to support your professional development, research, and scholarship.
Commonly covered
- Conferences and professional meetings
- Journal subscriptions and professional association dues
- Research materials
- Staff or students supporting your research, including students’ travel related to the research
Not covered
- Additional salary for yourself.
How your fund works
- Your balance carries forward. Indirect funds are not part of the operating budget and are not endowed. Any balance left at the end of the fiscal year stays in the fund until it is spent.
- New revenue is added quarterly. If you hold a grant that is generating indirect costs, the college’s share for your fund is usually recorded in January, April, July, and October.
- You are notified of your balance each year, in late June.
Indirect funds and other internal funding
To spread internal funding as broadly as possible, use your indirect funds before applying for college funds such as Wallace Scholarly Activities (WSA). This does not apply to FTR or Collaborative Summer Research (CSR) funds.
Inactive funds
If 10 years or more pass since the last expenditure from an indirect fund, the remaining balance returns to the college’s operating budget. You will be notified before this happens.
